Unleashing Coyote

Posted on: April 13, 2010

Boy, did I hit a wall after my business profile assignment was over. The fast-paced project with its numerous deadlines and daily discussions came to an abrupt end and I miss it.

Here I am with my novel again, with no one to impose deadlines but myself. Wonderful, but my fiction wheels are creaky and slow. So how will I loosen them up again? With poetry.

Poems are the salve for what ails, no matter what it is. And they do the trick for creaky fiction muscles, too. The sense-rich, concentrated impressions are a burst of elixir for imaginary journeys.

I’ve revisited poemcrazy: freeing your life with words, by Susan Goldsmith Wooldridge, and some of my favorite poems by Mary Oliver.

Here’s a pearl from Susan Goldsmith Wooldridge. “Let your writing be inspired by the coyote in you… The coyote in us doesn’t give a hoot what anybody thinks…. I’m inviting coyote into my life more often lately and we’ll see what happens.”

Now away I go to howl poems into the night.

Great advice to unleash our inner coyote. In my case, sometimes I have a hard time finding it if my routine for writing fiction gets messed up. Sheesh!
